| Greenwave started being published under that name in March 1984. Mike Bell's poem on the first page of that issue deserves reproduction here: |
Experts promise growth - We get recession |
|
Mike also wrote a final paragraph in that issue:
In the Cambridge region ... Greenwave is the magazine of the rising culture, written by people who live round here, telling you what's happening round here, so that more can be done to stop the madness. |

I believe Mike's commitment to Greenwave which carried on right through until Spring 1992 is still an inspiration to use now. At that time he decided he'd had enough and wrote and distributed a Greenwave "obituary". This stimulated people to action and a meeting at the Cambridge Centre that summer. This led to Greenwave being relaunched with an editorial team of 6 with Patrick Halpin taking on the financial side. During the next 3 years the number of committed people dwindled down to just Gill Brown, who did the typesetting, and me (Duncan MacDuffie) who did everything else. In December 1996 Gill decided she wasn't interested in doing any more typesetting and I developed suicidal depression and spent the next seven months in Fulbourn. After I came out that summer, I was still not good for much but easy volunteer work, in which I was much helped and encouraged by Julia and Kerrie in the Cambridge Volunteer Bureau. It wasn't until mid-October last year when I finally took myself in hand and challenged my negative thoughts for a week solidly that I emerged totally cured. Since then I have gone from strength to strength and feel better than ever, and ready to play whatever role I need to in relaunching Greenwave. Provided that someone else does the detailed work for a change. |
